Does your team constantly have to carry you, or do you have to wait overnight for your games to download? If so, your PS5’s internet could be too slow.
Having internet issues with your PS5 can be frustrating, to say the least. But there are a couple of things you can try to get it up to speed and level the playing field.
Why Is My PS5 Internet Speed So Slow?
There are several reasons why your PS5’s internet might be slow. It could be due to a problem with the PlayStation Network, your Wi-Fi, or an issue with your PS5 console. Finding out which of the above applies to your situation is the first step to fixing your internet issues.
The first thing to rule out is an issue with PlayStation’s servers or the servers of the game you are trying to play. A quick Google search will confirm if there are any overriding issues with either of the servers you are trying to connect to.
There could also be an issue with your internet provider. To check if this is the case, troubleshoot the other items in your house. If the connectivity is lacking in your other devices, there could be something wrong with your Wi-Fi. Check in with your internet service provider if this is the case.
If you have ruled out any problems with your internet provider or PlayStation’s servers, the issue might lie within your home. If that is the case, there are a few things you can try to boost the internet speed on your PS5.
Troubleshoot Your Home Wi-Fi
The further away your PS5 is from your router, the further the internet signal has to travel before it reaches your console. This significantly weakens the signal, especially if it has to travel through thick walls.
Perform an internet speed test in both of the rooms that your PS5 and your router are in. If your PS5 speed test comes back significantly slower than the room your router is in, consider moving your console closer to it to strengthen your internet signal.
Another way to strengthen your internet connection is by using a wired connection. The PS5 has an Ethernet port that allows you to connect your console directly to your router. Using a wired connection ensures the strongest internet possible.
If there are a lot of devices connected to your Wi-Fi at the same time, your router may be overloaded. This will result in a loss in signal strength as your router is struggling to supply a strong enough internet connection to everything at once. Try disconnecting all of your other devices before you play online.
There are many other ways to improve the internet connection inside your home. Check out these ways to improve your Wi-Fi router speed for even more tips you can use to fix your PS5’s internet speed.
Configure Your PS5’s Internet Settings
If you have exhausted all of the above troubleshooting methods and your PS5’s internet is still too slow, consider changing your console’s DNS settings. DNS stands for Domain Name System and is what the internet uses to locate and translate IP addresses. If your PS5 is having internet troubles, you can change your DNS server to the one that Google uses.
Google’s DNS server is lightning fast and could give your PS5 the boost it needs to improve its internet speed. Follow the instructions below to change your PS5’s DNS settings.
- Open your PS5 settings by pressing the gear icon.
- Navigate to Network and open the Settings.
- Click on Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select the connection you are currently using and press the options button on your DualSense controller to bring up the settings.
- Press Advanced Settings.
- Enter the following parameters:
IP Address Settings: Automatic.
DHCP Host: Do not specify.
DNS Configuration: Manual.
Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8
Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4
Proxy Server: Do not use.
MTU Settings: Automatic.
Your PS5 will now be connected to Google’s DNS server, and you should notice a significant improvement in your internet speed. If you would like to know more about DNS servers, check out our guide explaining how DNS servers affect your internet speed so much.
